Fake police recruitment gang busted, 3 arrested
The gang members visited a private school at Kaduvakulam on October 27 and sought the school and its ground for conducting a recruitment drive.

Kottayam: Three members of a nine-member gang which was conducting a fake recruitment and training drive for traffic police have been arrested.

Vattukunnel Shymon (40) of Kollad, Chellithara B Joy (32) of Olasha and Kunnumpally Vazhakuzhi Sunitamol (29) of Mooledam were arrested by the Town East police. Six members of the gang, including three women, managed to give the slip to the real cops.

The gang members visited a private school at Kaduvakulam on October 27 and sought the school and its ground for conducting a recruitment drive. The school authorities, who thought it was an official request, gave permission. The first test was held on October 28 in which 76 persons took part. Each participant had to pay Rs 200.

From the lot, 14 persons were chosen for the post of head constable. For the chosen 14, a training programme was held on last Wednesday and Thursday. Each person was charged Rs 3,000 for police uniforms.

Th successful candidates were given appointment order under the letterhead 'Traffic trained police force'. During the training, the instructors had appeared in police uniform and also wore a T-shirt used at the police training academy.

One of the gang members had told the candidates that he was a DIG, while others were SPs, CIs and SIs. Even the women were attired in police uniform. Several persons who have higher educational qualifications too fell prey to the gang.

After being informed about the "recruitment drive", the police surrounded the school ground and caught three of the gang members. The police said that there were cases against the gang members in Alappuzha district too. Under the directives of district police chief Harishankar, a police team headed by East CI T R Jiju caught the fraudsters.
