Snake lunges out of vegetable bag, passenger detained at Kochi airport

Nedumbassery, Ernakulam: A 40-year-old man was arrested at the airport here on Sunday after a venomous snake was found in his hand baggage. Palakkad native Sunil Kattakalam, remains in police custody for violating a law that prohibits carrying reptiles on flights. The NRI couldn't board his Abu Dhabi flight owing to legal hassles.

Sunil was to return to the UAE on an Air India Express flight, as he was returning from his vacation. The snake lunged out of the bag as the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on airport security duty was checking his baggage.

Sunil had reportedly purchased two kilos of koorka (Chinese Potato) from a farmer in his native village. The farmer had packed it in a plastic bag. Sunil wrapped the packet in another plastic bag and kept it in his hand baggage.

CISF security personnel killed the snake, a venomous one, as it emerged at the airport.

Sunil had to cancel his trip as the CISF handed him over to the police.
