Panamaram: This is in no way a curious case of the law catching up with the law enforcer, but an interesting tale of a police station being ‘handcuffed’.
The recent floods took its toll on the Kollamvayal police station near Kabani River in Wayanad district as the waters washed away batons, police caps and, to the chagrin of the police, the lock of the building in which the police station was situated. The total loss incurred was worth lakhs.
As the building became unsafe after the water receded, the police station was shifted to the nearby panchayat shopping complex. Interestingly, while moving out, the police locked the main door of the building with a handcuff. The new police station doesn’t have requisite facilities, and one has to climb many flights of stairs to the third floor to lodge a police complaint. Now, the Nirmiti Kendra building, which wears a deserted look, has many police-seized vehicles for company.
Both police and public are in distress as the police station doesn’t have an own building. Efforts were on to a find a suitable place, which is not affected by floods, on rent but landlords were not ready give their buildings to house a police station.
The authorities concerned had earmarked a piece of land for constructing a police station but had to drop the plan as the place was prone to floods. Search is on for a permanent space for the police station.
