Police serve dry ginger coffee to pilgrims

Ponkunnam: The Janamaithri police at Ponkunnam have opened a facility to supply dry ginger coffee to weary Sabarimala pilgrims passing along the route. On the inaugural day, the coffee was provided by Ponkunnam Puthiyakavu Temple. Temple president R Sukumaran Nair led the effort. On subsequent days, volunteers of various organisations will engage in the task.

Along with serving the dry ginger coffee, awareness will be given to travellers regarding safe driving practices. Basic facilities will also be provided for pilgrims. The initiative, which is into its seventh year, is organized with the support of various panchayats, voluntary organisations, traders and auto-taxi drivers in the area.

The facility was inaugurated by Dr N Jayaraj MLA, while Chirakkadavu panchayat president Jaya Sreedhar presided over. Among those present were block panchayat member A R Sagar, ward member Bindu Santhosh, Elikkulam panchayat member Mathews Perumanangad, DySP S Madhusudhanan, CI K R Mohandas, Pallikkathode SI A C Manoj Kumar, Janamaithri PRO H Hashim, Puthiyakavu Temple president R Sukumaran Nair and Sumesh Andrews. The activities are coordinated by a committee which has P Prasad as convener.
