Thiruvananthapuram: The residents of Karamana ward here have set an example in waste management by converting the area around a garbage dump into a park. Right next to the waste bins are chairs, garden plants and flowers. Interlocking bricks are laid on the walkways.

It was nine months ago that the garden came up on a small plot near the Kunjalummood bridge. Since then, it has become a favourite spot among the local people to spend some time relaxing as well as exchanging local gossip.

The waste management facility started functioning as an ‘Aerobic bin unit and material recovery facility’. Garbage collected from houses is sorted and the biodegradable items are brought here. There are two bins to mix the garbage with dry leaves, over which a special liquid that facilitates decomposition is applied. Soon, the garbage decomposes into organic fertilizer, which is sufficient for all the gardens in Karamana ward.

The two waste bins are installed within a separate enclosure and the park built around it. The chairs are placed in an aesthetically pleasing manner. Anyone passing along the road near the park would feel like stepping in and spending some time there.

The park remains open every day from 8 am to 7 pm.
