Kochi: Film-television actress Aswathy Babu has been arrested, on charges of possessing party drugs, from Thrikkakkara, Kochi, on Sunday. The police also arrested her driver Binoy Abraham.
The Thiruvananthapuram based actress and her driver was arrested after police seized MDMA (Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, commonly known as ecstasy), a synthetic drug worth lakhs that alters mood and perceptions, from her flat.
"Aswathy and her driver were taken into custody when they were waiting for a customer to pass on the drug MDMA near her residence here," said an officer attached to the Thrikakkara police station who did not wish to be identified.
"Their arrest has been recorded and a detailed probe has begun to find out more details," the officer added.
Aswathy had acted in 'Suvarna Purushan' and 'Velipadinte Pusthakam. She had also acted in several TV serials.
The shadow police raided the flat after they received a tip off regarding the drugs and that parties were organized in the flat.
Police have learned that the contraband was smuggled in from Bengaluru by Aswathy's driver Binoy Abraham.
In September this year, the Excise Department had seized illegal drugs worth Rs 200 crore in Ernakulam alone.
