Bengali worker dies as porch collapses during renovation

Pandalam: A casual labourer died and two others were injured when a part of house that was under renovation collapsed. The deceased has been identified as Samad (35), while the injured are Phool Babu (21) and Rajesh (25). All, including the deceased, are Bengal natives..

The incident took place at about 2.20 pm on Monday as the porch collapsed during the renovation of a house belonging to one Dr T C Cherian.

The work, which was undertaken by a construction company based in Haryana, had commenced a week ago with 11 workers. Apart from the Bengal natives, there were workers from Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka.

Two workers who came under the debris were rescued by local residents, fire force personnel who came from Adoor and Pandalam police. But Samad, who was caught under a slab, could not be rescued. His body was extricated by the fire personnel using a JCB that had to be brought to the spot to lift the slab.

The police said that arrangements will be made to take Samad's body to his hometown after a post-mortem is conducted.
