Orphaned girls get a safe home thanks to locals

Neyyatinkara: Two orphan girls were gifted a well-built house made with funds raised by local people. The housewarming ceremony was conducted the other day.

K A Ansalan, the local MLA, handed over the key to the girls. The house delivered to the girls in the Christmas month was aptly named 'Nakshatrakoodu.'

The girls Keerthi and Deepthi were orphaned after the untimely death of their parents Prakash and Indu who had migrated to Neyyatinkara from Pathanamthitta. Prakash, had died two years ago in an accident and their mother Indu who fell ill soon thereafter had to bear the brunt. The children were orphaned after Indu too died six months ago.

The children have been living in a small rented house so far. The neighbours ensured the orphans did not have to struggle after the demise of their parents.

The new house was built at a cost of about Rs 8 lakh. The MLA launched a fund-raising programme to which the locals contributed. Ansalan had earlier raised about Rs 4 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and put it as a term deposit in the bank in the name of Keerthi and of Deepthi. Suresh, a neighbour, donated two cents of land and soon work commenced. The building of the house was completed earlier than planned.

Keerthi is a student of Government Girls' High School, Neyyattinkara, Deepthi is a Class-5 student of J B School in the city. The local people have now decided to be their guardians.
