Kochi: Christmas was celebrated with joy and religious fervour by the faithful across Kerala on Tuesday.

Rejoicing the birth of Jesus Christ, believers thronged churches, where senior bishops and priests conducted special mass and gave out the Christmas message. Draped in finery, attended the special midnight mass in churches, which lasted till early on Tuesday.

In central Kerala, where the August floods created havoc in Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts, some churches conducted Christmas carol at those homes that were damaged and handed over gifts to the residents.

Carol groups of churches and art clubs have been busy visiting houses singing traditional Christmas songs.

Many youngsters and adults in Santa costumes went around distributing sweets and gifts to small children and the poor. Some people also visited orphanages, destitute homes and charitable organisations to spread love.

Most of the houses were specially decked up and business establishments offered special festive season discounts and freebies.

Sumptuous feast with the rich menu of ethnic dishes apart from cakes and confectioneries forms an important attraction on the special day.

Kerala Governor P Sathasivam, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and leaders of various political parties greeted people on the occasion.
