Kozhenchery: The excavation being conducted at Aranmula has led to the discovery of several rare items, including serpent figurines. The Archaeological Department is carrying out the work at the site where several artefacts where found after the devastating floods early this year. Its researchers are engaged in learning about the past by digging a plot at Koyiprath adjacent to the Anjilimoodu ghats of the river in Pathanamthitta district.
Over the last one week, several sculptures were found when excavations were carried out up to a depth of one metre at the site. In addition, several figurines were seen arranged neatly underground at another spot near the Pamba river. Exploration will start in the area soon.
Some of the sculptures found from the site resemble a figure with its tongue extended to touch the nose. Scientists engaged in the task said that such snake figurines had never been excavated from Kerala before. Such figurines were also not seen installed at the shrines where snake worship is practised in the state, said K Krishnaraj, who is heading the exploration team, and K R Sona, superintending archaeologist.
The age of the items can be determined only after elaborate scientific tests, they added.
