Thiruvananthapuram: The state school education system is all set for a major overhaul. Classes from 1 to 12 will be brought under single directorate. Currently they are under three categories – general education, higher secondary and vocational higher secondary.

The change was mooted by Dr MA Khader Committee which was formed to find ways to better the school education system. The control and coordination of the whole system will now come under the new single directorate, a move objected by higher secondary teachers' associations.

Other suggestions include graduation as minimum qualification for primary school (class 1-7) teachers. Professional experience equalling graduation too will be required. Masters will be the minimum qualification at the higher secondary level.

Classes renamed

New classification: Class 1 - 4 (lower primary), 4 - 7 (primary), 8 - 10 (lower secondary) 11 - 12 (secondary). All vocational secondary schools will now be secondary schools.

Principal

The principal will be head at all levels of schools (lower primary, primary, lower secondary and secondary), assisted by a vice principal. Higher secondary, VHSC teachers will become principals based on seniority. Current high school principals will continue to hold the position.
