Suspicious death of Annliya triggers smear campaign against nurses
UNA president Jasminsha and Annliya.

Kochi: Jasminsha, the president of United Nurses Association (UNA), has come out against the smear campaign targeting nurses following the mysterious death of Annliya, the Bengaluru-based nurse who was found dead in Periyar River in late August.

Earlier, Annliya’s father Huygens Parakkal had revealed that some people who were upset over his decision to seek a probe into the death were showering abuse on him and family on Facebook.

Supporting Huygens, a large number of Facebook users have registered their protest against the campaign insulting nurses as well as the nursing profession. Jasminsha defended the nursing fraternity by writing in a Facebook post that some had posted insulting comments on nurses below the news related to Annliya’s death. “People who realise the importance of the nursing profession have reacted sharply to these comments,” he stated.

“I too studied at West Fort College of Nursing like Annliya. When I enquired about her with classmates, seniors, juniors and teachers, everyone had only good things to say about Annliya. She was good at not only studies but also singing. Annilya always had a smile on her face,” Jasminsha continued, while adding that she would not easily give up hope as she was smart.

Annliya's body was found after she was reported missing from Thrissur railway station on August 25. Her husband Justine has surrendered before the Chavakakd Judicial Magistrate Court as police took up the probe after Annliya’s father Huygens complained expressing doubts over her death.

Excerpts from his post:

“I had not so far posted anything for Annliya as it is the job of the police to clear the mystery over her death. I also do not wish to blame her husband or anyone else.

The nursing fraternity hit back strongly against the abusive comments over Annliya’s death.

Afterwards, I received some video messages, especially her husband’s video, and calls which prompted me to upload this post. Subsequently I made some enquiries and wish to state I will be with #Annliya till justice is ensured. So don’t send me videos or messages insulting Annliya,” he wrote.
