Personal issues led to Chithara murder: Police
Victin Basheer and the accused Shajahan

Kollam: The murder at Chithara was carried out over personal dispute, according to the remand report prepared by the police. The victim Basheer and the accused Shajahan had entered into argument on several occasions earlier, says the report. The police also said that they would examine whether there was a political angle to the case.

However, according to Basheer’s relatives, no politics was involved in the incident. The victim’s sister Aftha Beevi said that a dispute related to tapioca trade had led to the murder. Shajahan attacked Basheer by shouting, “Won’t you give me the tapioca?”, she said.

Rajeena, another relative, also said that Basheer and Shajahan had no previous enmity.

Meanwhile, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan claimed that the Chithara murder was an act of retaliation by the Congress to the twin murders at Periya. But the CPM will not hit back for the Chithara killing. The Congress should end the politics of murder, said Kodiyeri.

The police have taken Basheer’s neighbour Shajahan into custody in connection with the murder. The CPM observed a hartal in Chithara panchayat in protest against the brutal act.

Basheer was tapioca seller at Kadakkal market. Shajahan, an alcoholic, was involved in several cases, including one in which he allegedly stabbed his brother, said local people.
