Tirur: A sub-inspector who blocked a CPM march was slapped here in Malappuram district on Tuesday. The cop was manhandled as police tried to stop a protest march against the alleged misrule of Tirur Block Panchayat Administrative Council.

The incident happened during a tussle ensued between CPM members and police. As leaders tried to calm supporters, a man in blue shirt leaped ahead and slapped SI Gopalan without any provocation. Other policemen and leaders restrained the youth as he tried to hit the policeman again. He soon disappeared from the protest venue.

It was on Monday, four activists of the Democratic Youth federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of CPM, were arrested in Kottarakkara on charges of brutally attacking a team of police personnel on patrolling duty. This attack happened around midnight on Sunday.

The officers, attached to the mobile control room in Kottarakkara town, came under attack after they chased and intercepted the car in which the assailants were travelling after they were found to be driving recklessly.

Cases under the provisions of Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code were slapped on the accused.
