6 Keralites among 17 killed in Dubai bus accident

Dubai: Eight Indians, including six Keralites, were among the 17 killed in a bus accident in Dubai on Thursday. Several people were also injured in the horrifying incident.

Four of the deceased Malayalis have been identified - Thiruvananthapuram native Deepak Kumar, Jamaludeen Arakkaveettil, Thalassery native Chonokadavathu Ummer, his son Nabeel, Vasudevan and Tilakan. People from other nationalities were also among the victims, it was reported.

According to the Consulate General of India in Dubai, eight Indians have been killed in the accident. The other Indians identified are Feroz Khan Pathan, Reshma Feroz Khan Pathan, Kiran Johnny, Rajagopalan, and Tilakram Jawahar Thakur.

There were 31 passengers in the Dubai-bound tourist bus from Oman.

The driver lost control of the bus which rammed the traffic signal near the Rashidiya metro station on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road in Dubai on Thursday evening. The bus was completely destroyed in the accident.

The police and civil defence personnel were involved in rescue operations. The injured were rushed to the Rashid hospital. The bodies of the deceased were also kept in the mortuary of the same hospital.

Most of the passengers were returning to Dubai after celebrating Eid in Oman, the police said.

The bus belonged to the Mwasalat company. After the horrifying accident, all to-and-from Mwasalat bus services between Muscat and Dubai have been suspended until further orders.
