Kerala medical college admission hits roadblock due to ambiguous fee structure

NEET 2019: Interesting facts and statistics

Thiruvananthapuram: The medical college admission process in Kerala due to begin on Thursday seems to have hit a roadblock. The self-finance medical college managements have refused to begin the admission process without a  final decision on the year's fees.

The two associations of the self-financing medical college managements have submitted their decision to the government in writing. This has ruined the government's plan to begin option registrations after issuing notification. The MBBS admission notification has been delayed as a result.

Though the fee structure imposed in the previous year has been scrapped by the court, the new fee is yet to be decided. The government was planning to get an affidavit signed from the students saying that they will pay the fee that will be fixed by the Justice Rajendrababu Committee, but the college managements are against it.

The admission to the self-finance medical colleges cannot proceed without the cooperation of the managements. The alternative is to proceed with the admission of government medical colleges.

Though the onus of resolving this impasse lies on the health department, it has not initiated any measures in this regard. No plans have been made to talk to the college managements either.

Colleges can start accepting registrations for options only after the government issues a notification on how to conduct admission and submits it to the commissioner of entrance examination.

The government also had plans to start admissions to the second allotment of seats in engineering, architecture and pharmacy courses on Thursday. However, considering the uncertainty, it is unlikely.
