Which roads to take? Traffic update from rain-hit Kerala

Road traffic in several parts of Kerala have been affected due to flooding, landslide and uprooted trees as heavy rainfall continue to pound the state. As the rains eased a bit on Friday, the road traffic has been restored in some parts. However, some other parts remain inaccessible by road.

Traffic updates:

Alappuzha

Alappuzha-Changanassery road through Kuttanad is getting inundated. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has temporarily stopped the services along the route.

Kottayam

Traffic has been restored along the Kottayam-Kumuly route where flooding and landslide had blocked the road at Vandiperiyar. The KSRTC has resumed services along the route, however, the KSRTC did not conduct service along the Kumily-Kattappana-Ernakulam route after the road caved in.

Some parts of the Pala-Kottayam route have been inundated, however, the traffic has not been affected and buses are conducting services.

Along the Kottayam-Kumarakom route, roads at Aymanam, Thiruvarppu, and Arpookara panchayat regions have been inundated.

Water is entering low-lying areas of Kumarakom, Changanassery, and Kottayam town. Kottayam-Kumarakom raod, Changanassery-Alappuzha road, Thalayolaprambu-Vaikom road are also getting inundated. But water was said to be receding from Pala and Erattupetta regions.

No trouble on these roads:

Idukki

A minor landslide was reported near to an LP government school at Kudayathoor panchayat and a newly-constructed road was washed away. The road between Kallarkutty and Panamkutty was damaged again. A newly-built parallel bridge on the Kumaly-Munnar state highway was wrecked.

No problems in these parts of the district as of now:

• Kattappana-Thodupuzha-Ernakulam

• Kattappana-Mundakayam-Kottayam

• Kattappana-Puliyanmala-Kumily

• Kattappana-Anavilasam-Vellaramkunnu-Kumily

• Kattappana-Thookupalam-Nedumkandam

• Kattappana-Upputhara

Malappuram

No traffic issues have been reported along the Thrissur-Kozhikode route in Malappuram. The KSRTC is conducting services. However, other routes in the district are affected. Most of the towns have been isolated.

Though Kondotty Bypass on the Kozhikode-Malappuram-Palakkad national highway has been inundated, traffic is being routed through Valiyangadi. However, in the Malappuram-Perinthalmanna region, roads in Koottilangadi, Keeramkundu, and Oradampalam areas are submerged and therefore the traffic is not allowed through the same route.

The KSRTC buses from Palakkad are stopping their services at Perinthalamanna in the district. Kizhakethalaand Kottapadi junctions in the Malappuram town are flooded. Water has also entered thr Kozhikode road at a few places.

Manjeri, Tirur, Kuttipuram, Nilambur, and Edvanana regions remain isolated. Manjeri-Malappuram, Manjeri-Edavanna, Malappuram-Tirur, Manjeri-Perinthalmanna, Kuttipuram-Tirur routes have blockades. Buses are conducting services along some routes from Kottakkal.

Those heading to Kozhikode airport can take the Thrissur-Kozhikode route. And after the Calicut University campus, take the Kottapuram road opposite the KINFRA Food Park at Kakkanchery. From there, enter the Kozhikode-Palakkoad route to reach the airport junction and then proceed to the airport.

The roads from Manjeri, Malappuram, and Perinthalamanna have been flooded. Those coming from these areas would have to take the Kondotty colony road, and then come via the Meleparambu chira.

Thiruvananthapuram

While train service from Thiruvananthapuram to Alappuzha has been suspended, the rail service to Kottayam has been partially suspended. The KSRTC would conduct extra services to these destinations from its Thiruvananthapuram central depot.

A multi-axle bus AC Scania bus from the Thiruvananthapuram central depot would conduct services to Kozhikode via the Thiruvananthapuram airport, as per the information provided by the airport help desk.

Thrissur

Road traffic has been suspended along the Thrissur- Kunnamkulam road after areas near Kechery were inundated. Those vehicles heading to Kozhikode have to take right from Kechery Junction. Vehicles from the Kozhikode side to Thrissur should take left from Perumpilavu and reach Kechery.

KSRTC bus services

• The KSRTC is conducting services along the Ernakulam-Thrissur-Kozhikode-Kannur route.

• No trouble on Thrissur-Palakkad-Salem-Coimbatore route too.

• Along the Kozhikode-Palakkad route, the service is currently on only till Perinthalmanna.

• Buses would ply from Bangalore to Palakkad and Thrissur via Kozhikode at 12pm, 12,30pm, and 12.45pm.

• KSRTC will run a Multi-axle Scania from Thiruvananthapuram to Bangalore via Salem at 10pm Saturday.
