Thodupuzha: Flooding has occurred in Munnar town and Old Munnar again this year, forcing the authorities to act. Devikulam Sub-Collector Renu Raj has announced severe restrictions on constructions and a crackdown on encroachments along river banks.
The Muthirapuzha River had flooded in the recent rains, inundating several houses in Old Munnar. Moreover, pools have appeared at several spots. According to Renu Raj, a detailed report would be submitted to the District Collector regarding the constructions that hamper the natural flow of water. All such buildings would be demolished, she added.
It was pointed out that unscientific constructions and encroachments on the river banks had led to the latest flooding in Munnar. The Revenue Department also had blamed illegal constructions for water gushing into inhabited areas even after light showers.
Meanwhile, the Munnar tahsildar has been directed to prepare a list of the unauthorized buildings on river banks.
Continuous rains lashed several parts of Kerala for over a week under the influence of the 'vigorous' South West Monsoon as the death toll in its second spell rose to 104 with 37 people missing.
Last year also, in August, Kerala faced a deluge which killed over 400 people in rain related incidents.
