Thiruvananthapuram: One person has been suspended for threatening a student for wearing a ‘rakhi’ to University College campus. A group of six SFI members had abused a girl on Monday. The suspension came after efforts to appease the victim by a group of students and teachers failed.
The official announcement was made by principal Dr CC Babu over the loudspeaker. The suspended student is a member of the ad hoc committee formed after the SFI unit committee was dissolved after the stabbing case last month.
The fourth semester MA Political Science student had reached college on Monday wearing the rakhi her brother tied. An aggressive bunch of students barged into her classroom and threatened her. The student had to remove it and hide it in her dress after abuse mounted.
As efforts to snatch the rakhi failed, the SFI leader smashed a window pane in the classroom and got injured. SFI members also threatened teachers who tried to intervene.
Later, when they tried to appease the girl, she demanded an apology. She complained to the principal on Tuesday as SFI members refused to apologise. The suspension decision was made after a staff council meeting.
However, the decision to suspend the only one who smashed glass has turned controversial. The girl alleged that the college authorities refused her request to forward the complaint to the police even though her life was under threat.
The recent event shows security and safety measures taken after the stabbing incident have failed.
