Joint exercises get a leg up under ‘Fit Kannur’ programme

Kannur: Close on the heels of the Fit India Movement launched by the Prime Minister on National Sports Day, the Kannur district administration has kick-started a unique programme to encourage people to exercise as a group.

The programme christened ‘Fit Kannur’ has been put in place with the collective effort of the District's Sports Council, Tourism Promotion Council and Police. It aims to promote physical exercises in order to promote fitness and good health.

The programme was launched by District Collector T V Subhash in the presence of sportspersons, students, senior citizens, representatives of Walkers’ Club and residents associations, among others at the collectorate ground on November 1. It will be extended to panchayat level with the help of local sports clubs.

In the first phase, people will be allowed to work out at the collectorate ground and Town square, and later the police parade ground and other open spaces will be made available. In future, one ground per each panchayat can be used by people to exercise.

The district administration feels that more people will be interested in doing some physical activity if they work out as a group. Apart from walking, various games and aerobic exercises will also be part of the programme. Moreover, expert training will be given to people once in a week or two.
