Liquor sales in Kerala through the much-awaited Bev Q app has reportedly hit a wobbly terrain ahead of its planned listing on Google Play Store.

Faircode, the Kochi-based company that developed the app, had been unable to get the nod from Google for its launch despite repeated attempts, according to reports.

Some officials are now tagging the blame for the delay on the technical committee that oversaw the selection of the company had not done due diligence.

The security of the app is audited according to the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) standards, an online community that sets methodologies for web application security globally.

Faircode had been reportedly unable to comply with 10 key regulations of OWASP, including how it can safeguard against hacking attempts. The load test too was a failure.

The technical committee comprised Startup Mission, IT Mission and Bevco representatives as well as Kerala Information Technology Secretary.

A total of 29 companies participated in the tender floated by the Startup Mission.

Of these, 10 companies were shortlisted based on technical expertise and cost.

Faircode was reportedly chosen on the instructions of the IT Secretary and CEO of Startup Mission.

Now uncertainty looms over the launch of the app.

Even if the app is to be launched, technical snags are likely. With Bev Q generating a lot of interest, heavy traffic is expected once it goes online.

The app was submitted for listing on Google on Monday, May 18 evening.

The Kerala government had decided to develop the app to avoid overcrowding for the purchase of liquor as the fourth phase of lockdown eased norms.

As many as 551 bars and 260 beer and wine parlours had given consent letter to state-run Beverages Corporation (BEVCO), to sell alcohol as takeaways.

For each token issued, beer and wine parlours have to give fifty paise to Faircode, that developed the app.

Onmanorama could not independently verify the reported issues with Bevco, Faircode or state IT officials. Meanwhile, Bevco is planning to open liquor stores next week though testing of the app is a must before the launch.

Popular online food delivery platform Swiggy has begun the home delivery of liquor in Ranchi in Jharkhand. Swiggy said that the service will be extended to other cities in Jharkhand soon. Swiggy is also reportedly in talks with other governments on starting home delivery of liquor.
