After four hours, wild elephant rescued from well in Kothamangalam

Ernakulam: A wild elephant, which fell into a well after straying into human settlements near Pooyamkutty in Kothamangalam taluk of Ernakulam district, was rescued after a 4-hour operation on Wednesday. According to reports, the wild elephant is around seven years old.

The locals found the elephant in the well Wednesday morning. Though the forest officials arrived at the spot soon, the local residents staged a protest demanding an assurance from the former that they would either dig trenches or put up an electric fence in the forest areas that lie close to human settlements.

The forest department officials subsequently assured the local people that within six months electric fence that could ward off wild animals would be erected to secure human habitations.

The elephant came out of the well later after a JCB machine was used to level a side of the well.

Soon the elephant walked free and went to the road where a good number of two-wheelers were parked by onlookers.

Expressing its ire, the elephant kicked away a few two-wheelers before jumping over the fence on the road and entering an adjacent stream. Soon it swam across the stream and walked into the dense forest.

Last month too another wild elephant that had fallen into a well was rescued.
