Kattappana: A woman, who gave birth at a private hostel in Idukki, killed her own newborn, according to the police.

The police filed a case of unnatural death over the incident. The woman, who has been admitted to the hospital, will be slapped with murder charges. A native of Moolamattom, the woman is an employee of a bank in Idukki.

The unmarried woman gave birth to a baby boy at the private hostel at Kattappana on Friday.

Neither the woman's relatives nor the others staying at the hostel knew that the woman was pregnant. The woman even went to the bank without revealing that she was pregnant.

Her elder sister, who shared her hostel room, too did not know of the pregnancy. Grappling with labour pain on Friday, the woman asked her sister to get medicines from hostel authorities. After the sister left, the woman delivered the baby.

She subsequently informed others about the childbirth. She also said that the baby was stillborn.

The woman's health deteriorated and she was rushed to the Nedumkandam hospital and then moved to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital.

The police sent the baby's body to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. The autopsy report revealed that the baby was murdered. An injury to the head is suspected to be the cause of the death.

The police plan to take the woman into custody after she is discharged from the hospital.
