Mother of 3-year-old boy who died after swallowing coins starts indefinite protest

The mother of a three-year-old boy who died after swallowing coins has started an indefinite satyagraha in front of the district hospital in Aluva demanding punishment for the doctors accused of negligence in the death and the constitution of a medical board to investigate the case.

Prithviraj was taken to the hospital on August 1 after he told his grandmother that he had swallowed coins. The doctors, however, said that there was nothing to worry and asked them to go home. However, the boy died later. His mother Nandini and other relatives have alleged that negligence by doctors caused his death.

The protest is being led by the Prithviraj Justice Action Council formed by the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Coordinating Council. Nandini's mother Yashodha, her father’s younger brother Udayan, his wife Pushpa and state secretary of the Scheduled Caste Community Council Sunil C Kuttan also participated.

The protest will be held from 10 am to 6 pm daily till justice is served, by following the COVID protocol.

Prithviraj was the only son of Nandini, a Kollam native staying on rent at Kodimattom, Valanjambalam in west Kadungalloor.

He swallowed the coins on August 1. He was taken to the Aluva District Hospital, the Ernakulam General Hospital and the Alappuzha Medical College, but the doctors advised that he be given bananas and rice for the coin to go out of the body naturally.

The boy was taken back home but he died the next morning.

Nandini lodged a complaint with the Chief Minister alleging that the post-mortem report of the police surgeon and the police investigation were not credible.

Anwar Sadath MLA, district panchayat vice-president B A Abdul Muthalib and BJP constituency president A Senthilkumar visited the Satyagraha venue and declared their support for Nandi.
