Pettimudi tragedy: Teachers offer tributes to student victims on Teachers' Day

Munnar: In an emotional gesture on Teachers' Day, teachers from a school where some among the young victims of the Pettimudi landslide studied offered flowers at the spot where the children were laid to rest. On Teachers’ Day last year, the same students had presented flowers to these teachers.

Apart from laying flowers, the teachers from Little Flower School, Munnar lighted candles, prayed and erected pictures of their late students at the spot.

The Pettimudi disaster in Idukki district of Kerala had claimed the lives of 19 students studying in various schools. In addition to Little Flower School, the schools attended by the youngsters were Rajamala LP School; Government School, Munnar; Carmalagiri School, Korandakkad and Fathima Mata School, Chinnakkanal. None of these schools celebrated Teachers’ Day this year as a mark of respect to the young victims of the tragedy.

Teachers from Little Flower School who reached the spot were led by Sister Rosily Thomas, high school headmistress; Sister Hema, who was the class teacher of the deceased students and Sister Jayanthi.

The Pettimudi disaster took place on August 6 this year.
