Rajakumari: Fire force personnel rescued a 70-year-old man from the river.

Babychan of Bison Valley in Idukki district was stranded by a pillar below the bridge across Muthirapuzha River. Fire force personnel from Munnar and Adimali took part in the rescue operation.

The incident happened around 7am on Sunday. Estranged from his family, Babychan used to sleep by the bridge pillar near the river bank.

Due to incessant rainfall, the water level in the river rose and Babychan was not able to swim to safety.

Siju, who lived nearby, saw Babychan in distress, and alerted the fire force personnel and the local people.

Braving the strong currents, fire force personnel entered the river and reached the pillar. Babychan was made to sit in the safety net and pulled up to the bridge.

Babychan, who was in a weakened state after the ordeal, was taken to the community health centre at Chittirapuram.

Heavy rain and strong winds have been continuing in the area for the past three days. The water level at Muthirapuzha and Paniyar rivers is on the rise.
