UDF wins Unnikulam through draw of lots, BJP's Avinassery goes LDF way

The governing councils in panchayats occupied offices. Let’s find out who are the people heading the panchayats in various places.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

CPM declined to take the president's post in Pangode with SDPI support. CPM's Dilip who was elected as president later resigned. 

He became the president with the support of two SDPI members. In the 19 member panchayat, the seat tally is as follows CPM -8, Congress - 7, SDPI - 2, Welfare Party - 2. When a Congress candidate was fielded with the support of the Welfare Party, the SDPI extended support to the LDF . Congress's M M Shafi secured 9 vots while CPM's Dilip got 10 votes including the two votes of SDPI.

KOLLAM

Independent candidate Amina Sharif became the president of Ilambalkoor panchayat with the backing of UDF and NDA. The LDF is the single biggest group in the panchayat . LDF has 10 members, UDF - 4, NDA - 6, Independent  -1.

UDF won the Munroe Thuruthu panchayat through a draw of lots. The elections had given a hung council.

NDA grabs power in Kalluvathukkal panchayat . This is the first time in the history of the district that the BJP has come to power in a panchayat. 

UDF won Thekkumbhagam panchayat by a draw of lots. UDF - 6. LDF  -5, BJP - 1, independent - 1. With the independent supporting LDF candidate there was a tie between the two fronts resulting in a draw of lots.  

UDF came to power in Poruvazhy panchayat with the backing of SDPI. There was uncertainty in the panchayat ahead of the polls.  In the first round two votes went to UDF and one for the LDF. With   this the BJP was chucked out. In the second round the SDPI polled its three votes for the UDF candidate  and the latter came to power. The party positions UDF - 5, LDF - 5, NDA - 5, SDPI  - 3.

In Neduvathoor panchayat where BJP emerged as the single largest party, the election was won by UDF through a draw of lots. UDF - 6, LDF -4, NDA - 7, UDF  rebel - 1. UDF rebel Sathyabhama became the president.

PATHANAMTHITTA

LDF came to power in Ranni panchayat with the support of BJP.  Kerala Congress (M) candidate  Shobha Charly became the president. LDF  and UDF had a tie with five members each. The UDF made an attempt to capture power by making the independent candidate as president. However, the UDF move was defeated by the LDF with BJP support. The two BJP members supported the LDf candidate for the president’s post.

LDF's Binu Joseph became president of Kottangal panchayat with the support of SDPI. LDF and NDA had five seats each. The lone member of the SDPI voted for LDF while two members of the UDF abstained from voting.  Binu resigned after taking the oath.

CPM's Bindu Jerry became the president of Ranni Angadi through a draw of lots. 

The election to the president's post in Thottapuzhassery panchayat was deferred due to lack of quorum.

Congress member became president of Chittar panchayat with the support of LDF. There were two people for hte president's post from Congress. Of these LDF supported Sji Kulathinkal . The lDf had not fielded its candidate. Sajikulathinkal had defeated CPM's powerful leader M S Rajendran.

Congress's Jiji Varghese was elected president of Kozhencherry panchayat through a draw of lots. The independent member instead of putting his signatures on the back of the ballot paper wrote the name of the candidate turning the vote invalid. LDF and UDF have five members each . Collector intervened when LDF demanded a draw of lots.

CPM's Reshma Mariam Roy became the youngest panchayat president of Kerala . She took oath as the president of Aruvappulam panchayat.

ALAPPUZHA

LDF candidate became the president of Mannar grama panchayat where UDF is the single largest group. One of the Congress members voted for LDF. UDF has 9 members, LDF - 8 and NDA BJP - 1.

LDF member became president of Thiruperunthurai panchayat of Chennithala with the backing of a UDF mebr. Six BJP members and one independent abstained from voting.

Congress member became president of Kadakkarappally grama panchayat through a draw of lots.

LDF member Merlin Baiju became the president of Muttar grama panchayat where UDF is the single largest group. UDF - 6, LDF  - 5.

The president's election in Chingoli panchayat could not take place. There was a dispute over the presidential candidate of UDF which has seven members in the 13 member council. The congress leadership had chosen two persons for a tenure of three and two years respectively. However, the person who was to get a two year term and another member did not turn-up for the voting. The five UDF members who were present did not put their signatures on the register. Had they put their signatures, the LDF with 6 members would have gotten the president's post. To complete the quorum at least seven members have to take part in the meeting. Despite the election of vice president, his swearing in cannot take place as he has to be sworn in before the president.

LDF candidate Beena Biju got elected to president';s post in Thiruvanvandoor panchayat with UDF support. Later she resigned from the post. The BJP with five seats is the single largest party . LDf has four, UDf - 3 and one independent. LDf decided not to take the support of UDF.

Pandanad panchayat went to the BJP for the first time. BJP's Asha V   Narayan became hte president. BJP has six members in the  13 member council. LDF - 5,  UDF  - 2. With the UDF chucked out in the first round, the contest was between the LDF and BJP.

ERNAKULAM

The election to the post of presidents Vazhakulam grama panchayat, Vengola grama panchayat and Vazhakulam block panchayat could not be held because of  lack of quorum. In the 20 member Vazhakulam grama panchayat UDF's 11 member abstained, while in 23 member Vangola panchayat eight members of Twenty 20  and LDF 's six members abstained. UDF 's five members  and Twenty20's four members did not turn up at the 15 member Vazhakulam block panchayat presidnet's election. The elections to the president's post in these local bodies will take place tomorrow.

Annamma Andrews of UDF became the president of Ilanji panchayat with the support of LDF. Annama Andreews secured eight votes, Preethi Anil of Kerala Congress Joseph got four votes. Congress 4, Kerala Congress Jacob 1, CPM 1, CPI 1, Keal Congress M with one member came together to make Andrews president. BJP's lone member abstained from voting.

THRISSUR

LDF captured power in Avinissery panchayat which was ruled by the BJP. The LDF came to power with the help of Congress. Subsequently the LDF candidate resigned from presiden's post rejecting Congress support.

LDF secured power in Velunkara, Kaiparambu panchayats through a draw of lots.

PALAKKAD 

BJP candidate T P Sreedevi received CPM member Lalithambika's vote in the election to the post of President in Malampuzha Akathethara panchayat. 

Congress candidate Gokuldas became president  Mankara panchayat through a draw of  lots . With the vote of a CPM member turning invlaid , there was a tie between Marxists and Congress. 

LDF candidate got the president'  post in Kavassery panchayat in Alathur with one of the  UDF members  vote turning invaldi. LDF and  UDF has eight members each in the panchayat.

Congress's Mini Narayan  who is former vice president of the panchayat, got elected to the post of president of Kuzhalmannam panchayat through a toss. Congress and CPM have eight seats each. The lone BJP member abstained.

MALAPPURAM

UDF wrested the Elamkulam panchayat where Marxist doyen E M S Nambodiripad's house is located. The UDF captured the panchayat after 40 years through a draw of lots. LDF and UDF had won eight wards each in the elections. DCC general secretary C Sukumaran was elected as president.

LDF bagged the president's post in Niramaruthur panchayat where UDF has a majority. The LDF secured the post through a draw of lots. Of the 17 wards UDF has nine, LDF - 8. the vote of Muslim League member became invlaid frollwingwhich the draw of lots was conducted. UDF lost the opportunity to rule the panchayat for hte first time despite getting a majority.

KOZHIKODE

CPM's V Anusha who won from Mannur North ward was elected unopposed as president of  Kadalundi panchayat. UDF abstained from the poll. UDF abstained from the voting as it did not have a candidate for the post which is reserved for Scheduled Caste women. 

UDF's Indira Eradiyil became president of Unnikulam panchayat through a draw of lots.

Ayesha Ummer of Muslim League became president of Azhiyoor pancnayt through a draw of lots.

District, block panchayat presidents assume office

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

UDF bagged the post of Wayanad district panchayat through a draw of lots. After counting,  both the fronts ended up in a tie. Subsequently, Shamshad Marikkar was elected through a draw of lots.

P V Divya , 36, was elected as president of Kannur district panchayat while Nirmala Jimmy of Kerala Congress (M) was chosen as the Kottayam district panchayat president.

District Panchayat 

Thiruvananthapuram: 

D Suresh Kumar of CPM was elected unopposed as the district panchayat president of Thiruvananthapuram. UDF could not field candidates for the president’s post. As the post is reserved for Scheduled Caste, the UDF had no candidate from this particular category to be fielded for the president's post. Of the 26 divisions of the district panchayat , the LDF has 20 and UDF  - 6.

Kollam: 

Sam K Daniel of the LDF became the district panchayat president of Kollam after a series of dramatic events. Daniel is a member of the CPI district executive committee who won from Chadayamangalam division . LDF - 23, UDF  - 3, NDA - 0. Total seats - 26.

Pathanamthitta : 

Omalloor Sankaran of CPM became the president.  LDF has 12 and UDF 4 seats in the district panchayat.

Alappuzha: 

K G Rajeshwari of the CPM was elected unopposed as the district panchayat president. The UDF which has just 2 members did not field its candidate.

Kottayam: 

Nirmala Jimmy of Kerala Congress (M) was elected as president of district panchayat. She defeated the Congress candidate Radha P Nair by 14-7 margin. Janapaksham of P C George abstained from the polls.

Ernakulam: 

Ullas Thomas of the Congress was sworn in as the president of district panchayat. District collector S Suhas administered the oath to the new president. Ullas secured 16 votes , two members abstained and the opposition candidate A S Anil Kumar got 9 votes. Ullas was elected from the Avoli division of the district panchayat .

Thrissur: 

P K David of LDF became the district panchayat president of Thrissur. 

Palakkad : 

K Binumol of the CPM who won from Malampuzha division, was elected as district panchayat president. Of the 30 votes she got 27.

Malappuram: 

UDF 's M K Rafiq was elected district panchayat president by defeating LDF's Arif Nazir. The margin was 26-5. The vote of one of the UDF members was found invalid.

Kozhikode: 

Kanathil Jameela of the CPM became the district panchayat president defeating UDF candidate Ambika Mangalath. The margin was 18-8. One of the UDF members could not exercise the vote due to Covid .

Wayanad: 

UDF candidate and district youth Congress president Samshad Marikkar became the district panchayat president through a draw of lots. 

Kannur: 

CPM's P V Divya was elected as district panchayat president. Divya secured 16 votes while her Congress rival Lissy Joseph got 7 votes. Of the 24 members , only 23 voted in the district panchayat president's election. The election of the Thillenkery division was countermanded following the death of a candidate. LDF secured 16 votes while UDF got 7. Divya is the outgoing vice president of the previous district panchayat. She was elected from Kalliasseri division.

She is a CPM district committee member and DYFI central committee member.

Kasargod: 

Baby Balakrishnan of the LDF who won from Madikai division, became the district panchayat president. 

Block Panchayath

Alappuzha: 

Congress member Jincy Jolly became president of Champakulam block panchayat through a draw of lots. LDF and UDF secured six votes each. The lone BJP member cast an invalid vote.

Ernakulam: 

The presidential election in Vazhakulam, Vengola, Vazhakulam block panchayat could not take place because of lack of quorum.  UDF's 11 members in the 20 member Vazhakulam panchayat, abstained from the poll. In the 23 member Vengola panchayat eight members of the Twenty20 and six members of the LDF abstained. In 15 member Vazhakulam block panchayat  UDF's five members , Twenty20's four did turn-up for the polls. The presidents’ election in these local bodies will take place tomorrow.

LDF's Simna Santosh was elected as president of Paravur Block panchayat. She is a member from the 12th division. Simna secured ten votes while UDF 's Mani Teacher got only three votes. Congress's V R Ashokan was elected as president of Vadavucode block panchayat . He won against Jubil George of CPM who secured three votes. In the 13-member block panchayat, Twenty20 had won five seats but it abstained from the polls following which Congress member became the president.

UDF's P A M Basheer became Kothamangalam block panchayat president. He secured eight votes and his rival K K Gopi got six votes. UDF's Meri Devassykutty was elected as block panchayat president of Angamaly. She secured nine votes while LDF's candidate Ancy D Joe got three votes. One member abstained from voting.

Kozhikode: 

V K Anitha of LDF was elected as Balussery block panchayat. 

K P Gopalan Nair of CPM was elected as Melady block panchayat president. He defeated UDF's Rajeevan Kodaloor. The margin was 9-4. Gopalan Nair is the outgoing president of Keezhariyoor panchayat.
