Wow! How a cute home was built out of its quaint avatar

Bengaluru flat

Architect-designer Rahul Menon and team diligently went about their homework while constructing and doing up Amit Sebastian’s home on Horamavu Road in Bengaluru. The main task was to craft and fit all the pieces of furniture into a new milieu. Sebastian, the owner, was still into his old décor and to replicate it in an all-new environment was not quite easy. But the designer did it. Each piece of old furniture was looked into before the decor was set up anew.

Living area

The striking design element here is the metal tree on a wall covered with blue wallpaper. The eye-catching “Tree of Life” done in brass stands out from the wall space. Some pieces of furniture have been given a facelift and they merge into the room décor. Athangudi tiles for the floor and an ornate bronze screen dress up the room in ethnic colours. The screen provides privacy.

Dining space

The highlight of the dining space is a carpeted area in brown where the table and chairs rest. This is a striking contrast to the micro cement flooring in white. The old furniture sets fit in well here. What gives life to the apartment is the vertical garden on the balcony. An old almirah looks chic with a makeover in Kancheevaram silk. The false ceiling in gypsum adds to the overall style.

Bedrooms

There are two bedrooms. An entire wall of the master bedroom has been done up in exposed bricks. The pattern on the wooden floor has been copied on to the sideboard and headboard as well.

Kitchen

White and walnut are the colour themes within the kitchen. The exposed brick work matches with the decor. A breakfast counter and false ceiling in gypsum are the added style elements in the open-style kitchen. The cupboards are in multiwood.

Swing

The owner finally got what he had longed for … a swing. A big, bright red ceramic jar completes the frame which looks every bit elegant.

Study area

The study area unfolds to the left of the main door. The only décor here is a 25-year-old chair. The wooden flooring completes the picture.

Entertainment zone

An old bedroom has been converted into a space where the kids can have a cool time. Two old beds have been given a makeover. The beds are sofas now and can double up as beds any time. With frames of heroes decorating the walls and a home theatre added to the space, the entertainment area is comfy and cool.
