This Kozhikode house is a fine example low-cost renovation
The space constraints felt in the interior was solved by the renovation.

There are several old houses which are structurally strong but have lost their ‘modern’ charm. For the owners of such buildings who wish to give their house a trendy appearance without spending much money, here is a solution that avoids pulling down the old structure and constructing a new one.

Mariyath decided to renovate her 2,600 sq feet house on 12 cents at Purakkattiry in Kozhikode to make it look all new. Another advantage of renovation was that space constraints felt in the interior could be solved. This too was done by carrying out works without damaging the structure.

The renovated house has a living room, dining area, kitchen and four bedrooms. Plywood and veneer finish is given to the interior while wood and toughened glass are used for the handrails of the staircase.

The major changes

Many of the walls between rooms in the old house were demolished. This created more space inside. Old mosaic flooring was replaced with Italian marble, giving a totally new appearance. On the exterior walls, cladding panels and planter box were installed as per the trend.

Another change was at the porch, which was made bigger. For better look, all the old doors and windows were replaced.

The kitchen was made modern by giving it an acrylic finish and Korean stone was laid on the counter. The redesign allowed cross ventilation in the interior and a cool atmosphere prevails.

The total expense incurred for the renovation, including masonry and interior works, is said to be just Rs 20 lakh.

Mariyath’s house is the best model that can be emulated for converting your old house into a brand new one at a moderate cost.
