A house in Malappuram with full of surprises inside

This Malappuram house has full of surprises inside
With a box-shaped elevation, this house is a fine example of the contemporary style elegant home.

Designer Hidayath began to think of building a new house when the family faced space constraints in their 30-year-old terraced house at Elamaram, Malappuram.

Instead of constructing a new house, it was decided that the old house would be renovated and transformed into a house with modern facilities. It was Hidayath and his family who did the designing and planning.

The 10 cents plot on which the house stood was in two levels, and the ground level is around 2.5 meters below the surface of the road. The house is re-constructed without disrupting the natural setting of the plot. Two bedrooms were initially built at the lowest level, which is not visible from the road.

The family stayed there while the construction of the rest of the house was under way. In fact, the house, which is two storied, would seem like a single storied house from the outside.

With a box-shaped elevation, this house is a fine example of the contemporary style elegant home. The 1500 sq ft house has a living space, dining area, kitchen and four bed rooms.

Creepers are allowed to climb over a GI grill which is installed adjacent to the car porch. This feature adds a unique charm to the exterior of the house. There is a small grill pergola on the sit-out and a wooden bench in ‘L’ shape is arranged here.

Light shades are used predominantly in the interiors. Walls which separate the spaces are highlighted using red paint with copper finish. Marbonite in matte finish are paved on the floor in the main areas, while tiles in wooden finish are used in the bedrooms and kitchen.

The interiors are designed in the semi-open style which makes it look more vast and spacious. The formal and family living spaces and the dining area are open and are arranged as part of the main hall.

The beautiful courtyard, which can be viewed from every corner of the house, is an eye-catching feature. The vertical garden brings nature inside and enhances the charm of the courtyard.

The custom-made dining table made with acacia wood has a unique design. Instead of chairs, benches are arranged on both sides of the dining table. The elegant hanging lights above the dining table significantly enhance the pleasant ambience of the space.

The plywood ceiling in the family living area is a stand-out feature. Hidayath reveals the secret behind adding such an interesting element. The space above it is left vacant so that the family can build a stair way to the terrace in future. The family is thrilled that their house has many such features which offer a surprise for the guests.

Grill windows are installed on both the walls in the bed rooms. Two bedrooms are bath-attached. The bathroom, constructed in the concealed style, is revealed when one opens the wardrobe door.

The kitchen is primarily furnished using plywood. Granite is paved on the counter top. The work area, in open style, completes the kitchen.

The construction of the house was completed in just 10 months. Hidayath says that he spent Rs 25 lakh for the construction and furnishing of the house. The family excitedly says that they are happy and proud about their new home which has loads of surprises inside.

Factors which helped keep expenses at bay:

Wall putty in light shades is used on the outer walls

Wooden decor isn’t much used in the interiors

Light points are directly installed without the false ceiling

The cupboards and wardrobes are done in aluminum fabrication

Reasonably priced marbonite is paved on the floor
