That every Keralite expatriate dreams to build a house of their own, in their home town, is no big secret. Arun Kumar, a native of Kidangur near Angamaly, is excited to show around his brand new house. “I built this house overcoming many hurdles. It indeed is a major challenge for an expatriate hailing from an upper middle class family to arrange the funds for constructing a house, within just a year.

However, everything fell in place when designer Shinto was roped into the project. Though it was initially decided that the budget would be Rs 40 lakh, it was increased as I realized that the house of my dreams wouldn’t be completed in it. The construction proceeded in stages whenever the finances were available,” says Arun.

Arun owned a 9.5 cents plot, close to his ancestral house in Angamaly. This rectangular plot has a well right in the middle of it. It was quite a challenge to build the house without getting rid of the well. However, this puzzle was solved when Shinto drew a beautiful plan of the house by retaining the well.

The exteriors feature countless designer elements which make the house look incredibly attractive. The show wall stands out for its eye catching texture in rustic finish. The pergola done in GI tubes on the balcony too is a unique and interesting feature.

This stunning house, built in 2300 sq ft, has a sit out, formal and family living areas, upper living space, dining area, courtyard, three bedrooms, kitchen with an adjacent work area and a spacious balcony as well. Vitrified tiles in matte finish are paved on the floor in all the common areas. Meanwhile, the dining area is highlighted by paving wooden tiles. Rollers and beautiful Roman blinds lend a chic look to the interiors. The paneling in the formal living area which features a blend of cement texture and laminate texture instantly draws the eye. Gypsum false ceiling has been installed in the common areas and in the bedrooms as well.

The well now stands in the patio just beside the dining area. The patio has been made beautiful by paving shiny pebbles and decorative plants as well. One can enter the patio from the dining area through a sliding glass door. This ensures abundant supply of natural sun shine and excellent cross ventilation in the central part of the house.

The family living space and the stair area are designed in double height. This makes the spaces look incredibly vast and spacious. There is a small pergola sky light in the ceiling here to illuminate the interiors with sun light. The stair way and its hand railings have been built by fabricating GI tubes and MS pipes. A storage and inverter space has been arranged beneath the stair way, making excellent use of the spaces. There is a partition cum TV wall in the family living area.

The bath attached bedrooms have in built – wardrobes for storage and separate dressing spaces as well. Panelling in attractive shades of hues are done on the head boards to make the bedrooms beautiful. Furnishing is done in plywood and laminate finish.

The kitchen, done in multi wood – laminate finish, has simple designs and features to make the maintenance easier. An adjacent work area completes the kitchen space. The outer walls of the kitchen are decorated with beautiful claddings in natural stones that make this area stand out.

The car porch isn’t built yet as the family doesn’t live here permanently. However, space has been allotted to build the car porch in the future. A part of the front yard has been paved with interlocked bricks to make maintenance easier. Meanwhile, pebbles are used in the rest of the yard so that rainwater would seep into the earth.

The construction of this beautiful house, including the structure and the furnishing, was completed on a budget of Rs 55 lakh. Though the budget has exceeded a bit than the initially decided amount, the family is thrilled that they got the house of their dreams.
