Dinesh and Nisha’s brand new flat in Kakkad, Kannur, Kerala, has an array of beautiful surprises in store, right from the entrance door itself. The expatriate couple wanted their flat to be designed in a way which suits a modern and foreign lifestyle.

Swanky interiors

The flat, which looked quite different when the builder had handed it over, has been completely redecorated to suit the tastes of the owners. The stunning flat, designed in 1300 sq ft, has a foyer space, formal and family living spaces, and a bedroom cum home theatre, dining area, two bedrooms and a kitchen with an adjacent work area.

A flush door, instead of a traditional wooden door, is used at the entrance here. This type of door which is sandwiched between plywood panels has a smooth and plain surface. As there aren’t any engravings or other designer features on it, the flush doors are comparatively cheaper than the wooden doors. The general theme of minimalism, in fact, begins from the simple flush door at the entrance. A shoe rack has been arranged in the foyer space to disguise the electrical distribution board. Light boxes have been installed by doing multi wood CNC cuttings on the ceiling. The flooring works are done using digital vitrified tiles.

Open spaces

The living cum dining space is separated by an ‘L’ shaped couch that has amazing fabric upholstery. The roller blinds have curtain pockets too. These curtains could be easily concealed in the ceiling.

The gypsum ceiling is enhanced with profile lights as well. The TV unit has been arranged on the wall panelling in the formal living area. The connections for the speaker have been arranged in the entire interiors with volume control facilities in each room.

The dining table, made in rosewood, is extendable depending upon the number of guests. A crockery shelf, designed in the plywood laminate finish, completes the dining area. The shelf is designed in a unique style that it could be used as a bar counter as well.

The kitchen is spacious and has cabinets done in marine plywood with walnut wood laminate finish. The counter top has been paved with Korean stone. The tile and sand stone claddings on the kitchen backsplash is an eye-catching feature here. A breakfast counter which also acts as a family dining area is part of the kitchen. An adjacent work area completes the vast kitchen area.

Multipurpose room

The bedrooms are luxury spaces with all the modern facilities. The headboard in the master bedroom is clad with leather that adds an elegant charm to the room. Meanwhile, the wardrobes are in plywood and laminate finish. The window seating and the powder spaces make the bedrooms incredibly amazing. There were three bedrooms in the flat initially. One of them has now been turned into a convertible bedroom cum home theatre. This space becomes a guest bedroom whenever people are invited for sleepovers. Besides, this room is where the pooja space and the kids’ study area too are arranged.

The architects are often faced with the challenge of space constraints when it comes to designing flats. However, the multipurpose furniture used in this flat ensures that the spaces are meticulously utilized and arranged. Besides, the theme of minimalism plays a vital role in making this flat look charming and classy.
