The Andalurkavu temple near Thalassery in Kannur, Kerala, is quite famous. The annual festival here is a grand affair which sees millions of devotees flocking the temple to take part in the rituals. Houses near the temple get facelifts and are decorated with illuminations during the festival season to welcome the guests in style. Noted architect Shiju’s house is close to the Andalurkavu temple. The ace designer, who has built countless houses all over the state, shares his experiences of designing his own dream dwelling.
The contemporary box style elevation is eye catching. The sit out and the balcony have pergola ceilings paved with toughened glass. The trees and plants in the 10 cents have been retained.
This amazing abode has a car porch, sit out, formal and family living areas, prayer area, dining space, kitchen with a work area, four bedrooms, upper living area and a balcony are all arranged in 2376 sqft.
The interiors are designed in the open style to receive the guests who visit during the annual temple festival.
The entrance door opens to the formal living area which has been arranged by ensuring enough privacy. From here one could enter the spacious hall where the family living area, dining space and the stair area have been arranged. The pattern of the stairway, designed in three levels, is quite interesting. The wash area, meanwhile, has been arranged beneath the stairway to save space. Artificial grass is paved on the floor here. Glossy vitrified tiles have been used for flooring in the common areas.
The kitchen is furnished in attractive white and grey colored theme. The cabinets are made in multi wood. Meanwhile, nano white has been paved on the counter top. Interestingly, the splash back pasted with white tiles is the highlight of the kitchen.
A serving counter too has been arranged between the dining area and the kitchen to serve food for the guests easily.
There are two bedrooms each in both the floors. The bedrooms are designed by giving prime importance to storage units. The bath attached bedrooms have separate dressing spaces too.
It was during the pandemic times that the family realized the significance of their smartly designed house. The open spaces that aren’t congested played a pivotal role in granting a relaxing atmosphere. The separate study areas in the kids’ rooms proved beneficial when the classes were shifted to the virtual model during the lockdown. The family credits their brand new house for helping them adjust with the ‘new normal’ life during the pandemic.
