What makes Jayachandarn’s brand new house at Balaramapuram in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala stand out is its splendid amenities, despite being built in a 5 cents plot. The structure has been built by leaving the legal set back too. So, it is quite an impressive fete that such an amazing abode, with all the modern facilities, could be constructed in less than 4 cents. The elevation features the flat box style to save space. The wooden finished cladding on the outer wall of the upper storey grants a chic look to the elevation.

Designed in 2250 sqft, this space-efficient house has a car porch, sit-out, formal and family living areas, dining space, and kitchen with a work area, four bedrooms, study area, gazebo and balcony. The interiors are designed in the semi-open style to make the spaces look vaster. Interestingly, the interiors are furnished in white – wooden and earthy tones that add a delightful ambience to the spaces.

The entrance door opens to a spacious hall. A TV wall is what separates the living and dining areas. The stairway has been built in a compact manner without wasting any space. The primary aim of it is to climb to the upper floor and is not a design element that elevates the look of the interiors.

Though the family wanted more greenery around the house, the spatial limitation became a challenge. That is when the designer came up with the idea to arrange a gazebo above the car porch. This spot of tranquility and grace has now become the family’s favorite area in the house. The GI and toughened glass roof, comfortable sitting spaces and beautiful plants add a unique charm to the area.

Meanwhile, the family insisted on having a courtyard too in the house. A quaint yet elegant side courtyard has been arranged, which instantly grabs attention for its smart spacing and design. This area is adorned with a Buddha figurine that exudes positive vibes. The huge glass wall, meanwhile, brings in lots of natural sunshine that illuminates the inner spaces.

White glossy vitrified tiles have been paved on the floor. The spaces look vaster when the lights fall on these tiles and get reflected. The old wood that was procured when the owner’s ancestral home was dismantled has been reused for furnishing here. These are used to decorate the headboards in the bedrooms. Moreover, a hanging cot in the upper storey too has been made using reused wood.

There are two bedrooms each in both the floors. The bath attached bedrooms have in – built wardrobes for storage.

Meanwhile, the pantry kitchen is tastefully furnished in plywood with laminate finish. A sliding glass door too has been installed here to prevent the annoying cooking smells from spreading to the rest of the interiors. An adjacent work area completes the kitchen area.

Profile lights are installed on the outer walls of the house and on the compound walls too. These surely make the fabulous dwelling shine against the twilight sky. The guests who visit the family say that their new house hardly looks like it is built in just 5 cents. The construction of this spectacular abode, including the structure and furnishing, was completed on a budget of Rs 53 lakh.
