Sunil and Beena, both teachers, are committed to the cause of environmental conservation and lead an inspiring eco friendly lifestyle. So, they insisted that their new house too should be built without causing much damage to the earth and the surrounding environment. Noted architect Santilal of CostFord, who has designed countless eco friendly homes around the state, deserves credit for designing this amazing abode at Azhikode near Kodungallur in Kerala.

Hurudees stones have been used to build the structure as per the request of the family. Besides giving splendid finish to the house, these blocks are extremely eco friendly too.

The ground floor is built using the filler slab technology by laying a layer of mud tiles. Meanwhile, bamboo sheet has been paved on the GI truss work in the upper floor. Traditional mud roofing tiles are then paved over it to grant an ethnic look to the exteriors. This method of roofing ensures a cool and pleasant atmosphere inside the house.

Designed in 1750 sqft, this mesmerizing dwelling has a sit out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a work area and two bath attached bedrooms in the ground floor. Meanwhile, there is another bedroom, study area, living area and an open terrace in the upper floor.

The interiors exude the elegant charm of minimalism. The semi open spaces make the interiors look and feel vaster. Vitrified tiles have been paved on the floor.

The brilliant use of bamboo in furnishing and decor is the highlight of this house. The curved window made using bamboo in the upper floor is a spectacular design feature that attracts instant attention. Similarly, the hand railings of the stairway too feature bamboo, giving it a rustic charm.

Wooden steps and steel frame of the stairway is a fabulous combination. Moreover, the fresh coat of polish on the steps adds a unique charm to the stairway. Arranging storage spaces beneath the stairway is a smart way of utilizing spaces wisely. Moreover, a mezzanine floor too has been built where the study area is arranged. From here, one could easily enter the upper living area.

The bedrooms are simple and have all the required facilities. Wardrobes are arranged here for storage.

Interestingly, bamboo sheets have been used on the cupboard doors in the kitchen. This indeed is a unique addition that grants an exotic look to the kitchen. The counter top, meanwhile, has been paved with granite.

This spectacular eco friendly dwelling was constructed during the pandemic times by strictly adhering to the lockdown protocols with minimum number of workers. Despite that, the construction could be completed in just six months. The most amazing fact about this eco friendly abode is that its construction, including the structure and furnishing, was completed on a moderate budget of Rs 28 lakhs.
