Architect Anoop Shivanandan’s brand new house called ‘Iha’ at Kakkanad in Kochi, Kerala is a contemporary abode that exudes classy elegance and chic style. A major share of the budget was spent to purchase the 5 cents land in Kakkanad, at the heart of the urban center. So, it was quite a challenge building a beautiful house with all the modern amenities in a small plot, that too by staying within the limited budget.
The structure has been designed to suit the tropical climate of Kerala which receives ample amount of rainfall and sunshine.
Designed in 1600 sqft, this fabulous abode has a car porch, sit-out, living and dining areas, courtyard, kitchen with work area and two bedrooms in the ground floor. At least two more rooms could be added in the upper floor, if required, in the future. The car porch and the upper living area have GI truss roofs. The louvres on the structure are incredibly stylish and let in natural light and air too.
As the interiors are designed in the open style, the house hardly looks like it has been built on a smaller plot. However, partitions have been smartly added between spaces to ensure privacy. Kota stones and vitrified tiles are paved on the floor adding panache to the interiors.
The beautiful courtyard is the highlight of the interiors. A sliding door is what connects the dining area to the courtyard. The pergola skylight brings in lots of sunshine that illuminates the interiors in golden hue. The indoor plants add a hint of greenery too.
The bedrooms are simple and functional. Huge sliding windows are an eye catching feature in the bedrooms. The bath attached bedrooms have in – built storage units too.
From the open kitchen one could easily grab a view of the serene courtyard. The cabinets in the kitchen are done in multi wood finish. Meanwhile, nano white has been paved on the counter top.
Work spaces too have been separated in the family living area and the bedrooms. Anoop says that these work units became helpful during the lockdown period when he began working from home. His friends and clients are impressed by the unique features of the architect’s house. They say that the house hardly looks like it is built on a smaller plot. The family too is happy that they could spend the lockdown days in the safety and comfort of their dream dwelling.
