Moss bothering you in monsoon? Try these methods

Kerala has tropical weather where we receive ample sunshine and healthy monsoons too. These sudden changes in climate could cause moss to grow on walls and other concrete surfaces, marring the beauty of the outer walls. Besides roof and outer walls, moss or molds could grow on the steps too, making the stairway slippery and dangerous. The moss that grows on the roof can store moisture that gets seeped into the walls. This would then create cracks on the walls and cause leaks. So, it is important to remove the moss as soon as you spot them. Here are some easy methods to remove moss from the walls and other surfaces.

Baking soda

Sprinkle baking soda on the mossy concrete surfaces and leave it for at least 24 hours. It is better to try this method when it isn’t raining. Clean the moss that has begun to separate using a broom.

Vinegar and water

Mix water and white vinegar in equal parts. Spray this mixture over the moss. This solution would weaken the moss and it would then be easier to clean. This is the best method to remove moss from tiles. However, spray a little bit of solution on the edge of the tiles to make sure that the vinegar doesn’t fade the color of the tiles.

Bleach and water

Bleach is an excellent agent to remove moss. Pour the bleach solution directly over the moss. After some time, scrub using a sturdy brush. In case you are using it in lawns, do it carefully so that the solution doesn’t fall on the grass. Garden bleach should be used here.

To prevent moss from growing in lawns

The moss or the rogue growths in lawns would not only ruin the beauty of the lawn but affect the health of the grass blades too. To prevent this, slaked lime solution could be sprayed, once in a year. Moss wouldn’t grow roots in soil that has the presence of slaked lime. Moreover, make sure to nourish the grass blades with manure or fertilizers.

Here’s how to remove moss from outdoor furniture

Moss could easily grow on furniture pieces that are placed in the garden. You should have a clear idea about the material in which the furniture has been made, before deciding the ingredients in the solution. In case the furniture is made in plastic, steel or aluminium, the cleaning ingredient should be mixed in hot water. Dip a soft cloth or a sponge in this solution and slowly wipe off the moss.
