Thoppumpady: Every time autorickshaw driver Kumbalangi Kadugamparambil Job spots a pothole on the road, he stops. He would then clean it, spread a sheet of tar and fill it with stone metals. Once it sets, he would spread another layer of tar sheet and finish it off with some metals chips and dust.

When the job is done, he carries on, without waiting to take any credit. As he rides away on his auto, his gaze is fixed on the road to find the next dangerous spot that could put motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, in trouble. Job doesn’t have obsessive compulsive disorder. Filling up potholes is his way of giving back to society and he has been doing it for the past 16 years. Job has repaired the potholes of almost all roads in Kochi.

Had it not been for Job’s selfless initiative, roads in West Kochi would now be riddled with potholes, say locals. Apparently, the giant pothole at Vathuruthy too was closed by Job who came around in his auto at night when there was less traffic to do the work. Job’s missionary zeal has transformed others too. Inspired by his dedication, PWD contractors, who take up the tarring jobs in the area, would entrust him with leftover metal and tar, so that he can use it to repair potholes as and when it appears.

As Job has worked as a tarring laborer in the past, all repair works are done in a very professional manner. According to the locals, Job’s tarring works have proved to last longer than those by the civic authorities.
