Tiruvalla: The Tiruvalla taluk hospital is a better place thanks to a group of enterprising engineering students. The youngsters gave a long-pending face-lift to the hospital and even repaired biomedical equipment - all for just Rs 68,000, way below the estimate of Rs 1 crore!

Students of the Government Engineering College at Kallooppara near Pathanamthitta organized themselves under the National Service Scheme unit in their college to heal the hospital frequented by the poor people.

The 99 students split up into various groups to repair the abandoned biogas plant, rusting ambulance, generator, cots, trolleys and wheelchairs. A skilled team of six students repaired the biomedical equipment of the hospital after receiving special training.

The students plan to extend their work to the other hospitals in Pathanamthitta district.
