Thought for the day: The real merit of character

A mother and her son went to the river bank to take a bath. When they reached there, another man was already taking a dip in the river. The son saw a coin resting on the pile of clothes that the man had kept on the river bank. He suggested that they should take the man’s coin. However, the mother stopped him.

Thought for the day: The real merit of character
It is the hideous nature of a person to feel sad at others' happiness, or find joy in someone's crisis or downfall.

Then the son said, “I will take the coin and hide behind that tree. When he gets back from the river and look for his coin, I would surprise him by returning it.” But his mother showed another way. She kept her own coin along with the man’s coin on the pile of clothes and they hid behind the tree. The man was shocked to find an extra coin on his pile of clothes which he left on the banks.

The happiness that comes after a sad incident may have an added impact. But a remedy may not be always helpful in completely overcoming the grief from a tragedy. It is the hideous nature of a person to feel sad at others' happiness, or find joy in someone's crisis or downfall. There are limitations for one to forcefully create happiness.

It is easy to make someone laugh. But, it isn’t easy make someone genuinely happy. Those who always laugh need not be necessarily happy. None would feel excited in receiving your gracious gestures after realizing that you have purposefully tried to hurt or insult them.

Some people make an effort to put on a visage of honesty and humility. However, their character would have truly turned impeccable had they used that time and energy to actually do something good instead of pretending as honest human beings. One’s real merit of character is valued not on the basis of what he or she does when everyone is watching them, but on the deeds away from the public glare.

Real saints are the ones who refrain from committing mistakes or sins despite being tempted.
