In the Indian culture, when a couple gets married it's the groom who ties a mangalsutra around the bride’s neck. But, two couples in Karnataka have broken this this age-old custom in a wedding held recently, raising the eyebrows of many.
In the marriage ceremony that took place in Vijayapura district in Karnataka, instead of the grooms, it was the brides who tied the mangalsutras around their grooms’ neck.
One of the couples, Amit and Priya, are software engineers. Prabhuraj and Ankita too got married at the same venue in the same manner.
The brides and grooms hail from different communities while Amit and Prabhuaj are first cousins. The wedding ceremony was held without following a muhurtham (auspicious time) either.
It was the couples' staunch belief in gender equality that led them to avoid conventional rituals of a traditional wedding.
The kanyadanam (giving away a daughter's hand in marriage) ceremony too was skipped.
The young couples believe they were able to send across a message against dowry and superstitions through their weddings.
