Onam is here!
The skies cleared just in time to celebrate Onam.
The students and teachers of Sacred Heart College, Thevara, flaunted traditional attire, recited folk songs and decorated the portico with 'pookkalam.'
Among a row of typical Kerala women in 'Kasavu' sarees, were Shruthi and Sunaina who donned 'mundu' and shirt. “We decided to look apart from other women in sarees and kasavu mundus. We are very well in traditional costume. After all who assigned gender roles to couture?!,” a confident Shruthi asked.
On the other hand, Sunaina said she wanted to give a competition to the boys wearing the same costume.
The college union decided to simplify the Onam celebrations this year in light of the floods and landslides that had ravaged Kerala last month, exactly a year after another.
The College Union aptly named the celebrations “Nisaram”, which is a trending word among youngsters post the release of a popular video from Karikku.
Gayatri Inaayat, vice-chairperson of the college union, said, “The name suggests that youngsters can overcome anything and come together for a common cause and celebration.”
A grand 'Thiruvathira' dance was organised by the Department of Communication. Elsewhere on the campus, many were seen taking selfies and group photos in ethnic costumes.
The college also ran a campaign against the use of drugs which culminated on the day of celebration. The campaigners were cheered by the students as they entered the campus.
Onam never ends without the customary 'sadya'. The students sat down to have a sumptuous ‘ela sadya.’ As expected, many even had several rounds of 'payasam'.
The students also made sure to clean up the premises before dispersing for Onam vacation.
