Can Piyush Goyal electrify Indian economy with the Union Budget?

He has qualifications and capabilities that could make him the favourite of any big multinational company for a CEO's post. If he sets a target, it will be achieved. He has shouldered all the responsibilities that were assigned to him very smartly. To top it, his name Piyush means 'amrit', i.e., immortal or elixir. Will Piyush become the amrit or the elixir the stagnating Indian economy is looking for? Everyone is eagerly awaiting the Budget of Piyush Goyal who has been given the additional responsibility of the finance ministry.

He has a strong academic record; all-India second rank holder in chartered accountant exam and second-rank holder in law from the University of Mumbai. Besides these, he has participated in the leadership programmes of Ivy League American universities such as Yale, Princeton and Harvard.

His son Dhruv Goyal and daughter Radhika Goyal have obtained their degrees from Harvard. From these one can easily guess the kind of stuff that will go into his Budget recommendations. He doesn't look like a typical Indian politician but can easily be passed off as a CEO of an MNC.

He should have been good at finance, which made the BJP to appoint him as its national treasurer. Unofficially, he still carries out the responsibilities of that post. When Modi came to power, Goyal was the Minister of State for Power, Coal and New and Renewable energy. He was promoted as a Cabinet minister with the responsibility of the Indian Railways in 2017. Goyal carried out the electrification of rural areas so meticulously that he even earned the praise of foreign countries. There was a marked improvement in generation of solar energy. Just before the elections, he announced that the Railways will recruit 2.3 lakh new employees.

Though the Railways has an allotted strength of 15 lakh employees, it currently has only 12.7 lakh employees. Besides, by the end of this year and next, nearly one lakh railway employees will retire. Goyal announced that in the first phase 1.3 lakh employees will be recruited from February. He also announced that 10% or 13,000 jobs will go to the economically weaker sections. The announcement was literally music to the ears of BJP's vote bank in north India.

The son of shipping minister Ved Prakash Goyal in the Vajpayee ministry and the three-time MLA Chandrakanta needs no lessons in the political aspects of economic policies. If he can bring electricity to 18,000 villages in a short span of time, his Budget just before the general elections could electrify the economy. This Goyal has the history of hitting all the passes he got into the net.
