Coimbatore: In a bizarre incident, cops at a police station in Coimbatore district in Tamil Nadu performed a goat sacrifice in a bid to reduce the number of crime and accidents within the station limits.

Two goats were sacrificed at the Kovilpalayam police station, which falls under the Karumathampatti division, around 4am on Wednesday. It is also alleged that mutton was cooked and served to the police personnel and certain political workers.

Reportedly, some local people had ‘advised’ the cops to perform 'keda vettu' (goat sacrifice) and sprinkle the blood on the station premises to ward off the problems. A political party had donated the goats, it is said.

The incidents of crime, including robbery, are common within the jurisdiction of the Kovilpalayam police station. At least one person gets killed in accident in the region in a week.

Adding to the worries, former inspector Shekaran was arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption officers last year for taking bribe. Police constable Tirumoorthy had recently died of health issues. Two weeks ago three workers had died while cleaning the septic tank of a pig-breeding centre at Keeranatham, within the police station limits.

District police superintendent Sujith Kumar has asked the Karumathampatti sub-division deputy police superintendent to submit a detailed report on the incident.

Kovilpalayam is about 18 km from Coimbatore city.
