Since Thursday, #Shut down Indian air space,' has been trending on twitter. More than 33,000 tweets have been published, apparently in response to reports that Pakistan had banned Indian flights to Pakistan to protest India's decision to abolish Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

What is funny about it?

The trigger for this twitter backlash was some reports that Islamabad had closed three out of nine air routes for Indian carriers. Following this, supporters of Pakistan's action started tweeting #Shut Down Indian Airspace, demanding a ban on all Indian flights to Pakistan. However, they forgot the simple fact that Pakistan has to shut its airspace – and not the Indian airspace – to deny entry to Indian flights. The proponents of the hashtag remain unmoved even after a few users pointed out their mistake.

Pakistan denies closure

The Civil Aviation Authority of Pakistan denied that it had neither closed its airspace for Indian flights nor re-routed any Indian flights after India's decision to abrogate Article 370. The agency's spokespersons told Indian News Agency, PTI, that all Indian flights were operated as per the schedule.

The last time Pakistan had closed its airspace for Indian flights was in February 2018, after India attacked terrorist camps in Balakot in Pakistan. India reciprocated immediately by denying entry to Pakistan flights. The stand-off ended on July 16 with Pakistan re-opening its space to Indian flights.
