JNU as MNU? How Twitter laughed at Hans Raj Hans' idea

BJP MP from North West Delhi and singer Hans Raj Hans suggested on Saturday that the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) be renamed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi as MNU.

Hans Raj, who was performing at an event called 'Ek shaam shaheedon ke naam' in JNU, attacked the Nehru-Gandhi family while talking about Kashmir and the abrogation of Article 370.

“We are facing the brunt of mistakes committed by our elders,” he was quoted by ANI.

Earlier too there have been demands to rename JNU. There were online petitions which urged the government to name JNU after the first Deputy Prime Minister of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

However, Hans Raj's idea offered fodder for Twitterati to have a good laugh. While some had fun suggesting more names that might be changed in line with the ruling party's ideology, others suggested that the BJP MP should change his name.

Hans Raj, who joined Shiromani Akali Dal in 2009, resigned in 2014 and joined the Congress in February 2016. In December 2016 he joined BJP and in 2019 replaced Udit Raj as the North West Delhi candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, who was also present at the event, said that from 'tukde tukde' they could hear chants of Vande Mataram and credited it to PM Modi's governance.

In February 2016, a protest organised by former members of the Democratic Students Union in JNU courted controversy after TV channels aired video suggesting that anti-India slogans were heard.

The slogans were criticised by several leaders both inside and outside JNU resulting in the arrest of Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar and other student leaders on sedition charges.
