Renown saxophone expert Kadri Gopalnath died on Friday succumbing to a prolonged illness.

The 69-year-old legend, born in Mangaluru of Karnataka took a liking for the saxophone when he heard it in the Mysore Palace band set as a child.

He mastered the western instrument and blended it artfully with Carnatic music.

Gopalnath earned many accolades including the Asthana Vidwan of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Sri Sringeri Sharadha Peetam, Sri Ahobila Mutt, Sri Pillayarpatti Temple and finally the Padma Shri.

He is survived his wife and two sons. One of his sons, Manikanth Kadri is a noted music director.
