Kochi: The Railways on Saturday canceled the contract of a vegetarian restaurant at the Ernakulam (town) North railway station for continuous supply of stale food.

Commercial manager V.C. Sudheesh said that the action was taken following regular complaints about the quality of food served at the restaurant. A month ago, as many as 14 sportspersons had suffered food poisoning after eating from the restaurant.

K.M. Mustafa, the contractor of the restaurant, has also been barred from floating tenders at Railways for a year. Earlier, the Railways had taken action against a stall at Aluva railway station for handling ice slabs meant for cooling bottled water in an unhygienic way. The stall was slapped with a fine of Rs 20,000.

Visuals of an ice slab falling on the railway track, the broken pieces then being collected and carried back to the stall had gone viral on the social media.
