Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu): Three members of a Keralite family were charred to death when their car caught fire near Mahabalipuram late Saturday night.

Palakkad natives Jayadevan; his wife, Remadevi; and daughter, Divyasree, were the victims. Jayadevan was working as an accountant in Chennai.

The incident occurred at Manamai near Mamallapuram when the trio were returning to Chennai after visiting Mahabalipuram, police said.

The locals, who noticed the blaze, alerted the fire force department and police.

Before the blaze was fully doused, the car was gutted, killing the three passengers.

A short circuit is suspected to have caused the blaze. The bodies were sent to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for autopsy.
