Thiruvananthapuram: IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman’s transfer out of Devikulam was not part of a promotion, as the Left Democratic Front government claimed. Even as he was serving as the subcollector, Venkitaraman was promoted to the senior grade on January 1.

Venkatiraman, who raised hackles within the ruling CPM with his relentless drive against encroachment in Munnar and surrounding areas, was transferred as employment and training director on Wednesday. The new post is equivalent to senior grade.

Revenue minister E. Chandrasekharan had sought to justify the move, saying that Venkitaraman was transferred with a promotion.

The transfer came a day after the Kerala High Court endorsed the steps Venkitaraman took to clear the encroachments in Munnar.
